Skull Base & ENT Surgeon

A skull base and ENT surgeon deals in diagnosis, management and surgical treatments of diseases and conditions associated with head and neck, particularly skull base, ear, nose and throat. This are of medicine is called otolaryngology and the ENT surgeons are usually referred to as otolaryngologists. The most important areas of concern for these specialists include issues affecting hearing, breathing, eating, balance and speech. Skull base surgery is a relatively newer area of concern for ENT surgeons who team up with neurosurgeons and radiologists to perform this procedure.

The base of skull is the most inferior and complicated area of skull and consists of five important bones surrounding areas like nasal cavity, inner ear, eye socket and sinuses. Abnormalities and cancers in the region were traditionally removed by open skull base surgery that required incisions in the skull or facial area. However, the modern skull base surgery involves endoscopic procedure which is much more convenient, takes less time and is minimally invasive. The principle subspecialties of skull base & ENT surgeon include otology, laryngology, rhinology, facial plastics and reconstructive surgery and head and neck oncologic surgery.

Here are few key situations that require appointment with a skull base & ENT surgeon:

  • Infection-driven growths
  • Pituitary tumors
  • Trigeminal neuralgia
  • Cerebrospinal fluid fistulas
  • Voice disorders
  • Cyst development
  • Blocked or inflamed sinuses
  • Swallowing disorders
  • Vascular malformations
  • Hearing loss due to ear infection
  • Tumors like meningiomas and chordomas
